Send kids to school with the right attitude

“Clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus.” #8212; Romans 13:14 (NIV)

Each year at this time, I reflect with fond memories on the routine of sending my kids back to school.

Summer growth spurts caused the selection of clothing in the dresser drawers to dwindle down to meager pickings. Worn-out, faded blue jeans with rips and tears from daily adventures left just cause for shopping trips for new clothing that was appropriate attire to wear to school.

#147;Mother, this just doesn#146;t fit right,#148; my son would complain as we searched the shelves for a comfortable pair of jeans. They were either too long, too short or too tight. I was exhausted looking for the correct fit.

As a parent, I had a responsibility to clothe my children. They needed shoes that fit and clothes that were appropriate. I wanted them to be safe, comfortable and adequately dressed. After exerting effort and energy, the mission was accomplished.

More than the material clothing I provided for my children as they returned to school each year, was the importance that they were donning the apparel of the love of Jesus.

This means they needed to display loving character traits such as respect for another#146;s feelings, restraint from teasing, bullying or name calling. They needed to hold others in esteem by not taking their belongings or damaging their property.

These are the God-given principles that will keep them out of the principal#146;s office and follow them with a blessed life. These things will make them an excellent example to others.

The Bible uses words such as clothe, but it is referring to our behavior. And, just as we place material clothing on our bodies, we must place on good behavior. These kinds of behaviors don#146;t just come naturally. We make choices and pray for strength and guidance to display them.

Better than the finest clothing in our closet, we can encourage and inspire our children and send them back to school with a loving, positive spirit.
