Wisconsin man drowns while snorkeling in Kauai

HA'ENA, Hawaii — Authorities say a 32-year-old Wisconsin man who was scuba diving and snorkeling at Kauai's Haena Beach Park has drowned.

The Kauai Fire Department says Chester Stoda of Black River Falls, Wis., was scuba diving with a friend Friday afternoon. The friend eventually returned to shore while Stoda remained in the water to snorkel.

The Garden Island reports that lifeguard John Cammak watched as Stoda snorkeled and drifted closer in front of the lifeguard stand. About a half hour later, Cammak saw that Stoda was about 50 yards offshore. He swam out and found Stoda unconscious.

Cammak brought him back to shore, where beachgoers retrieved first aid and communications equipment from the lifeguard stand. Medics transported Stoda to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
