Small plane crashes, kills 1 near Racine airport

RACINE, Wis. — Authorities say a small plane has crashed in southeast Wisconsin, killing the only person on board.

The Federal Aviation Administration reports that the plane went down around 6:30 p.m. Monday about 2 ½ miles south of the airport in Racine.

FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory says one person was aboard the plane and was killed. She didn’t have additional details.

Calls to the Racine County sheriff’s department were directed to a Mount Pleasant police spokesman who didn’t immediately return a message from The Associated Press. A message also was left for the county coroner.

The general manager at Batten International Airport in Racine tells The Journal Times that authorities told him the Milwaukee-bound plane was trying to land at the airport after it lost power or began losing power.
