Elgin Theatre Company to stage ‘Bleacher Bums’

The Elgin Theatre Company will present “Bleacher Bums,” an award-wining comedy written by fans who happen to be actors.

The 1977 play was written collaboratively by members of Chicago’s Organic Theater Company from an idea by actor Joe Mantegna. A 1979 performance of the play was taped for PBS television and in 2002 a made-for-TV movie adaptation was produced.

Set in the bleachers at Wrigley Field in Chicago, die-hard Cubs fans root for their star-crossed team in this nine-inning comedy. The motley group includes a rabid cheerleader, a blind man who follows the game by transistor radio, a bathing beauty, a nerd and various other denizens of the cheap seats.

Directed by die-hard Cubs fan Linda Collins, the show will be presented Sept. 9-11, 16-18, 23-25. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. and Sunday performances start at 2 p.m. All performances will be at the Kimball Street Theater of the Elgin Academy, Kimball Street and Dundee Avenue in downtown Elgin.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and youth. For ticket reservations, call (847) 741-0532 or email tickets@inil.com. For more information, visit ETC. at www.elgin-theatre.org.
