Man accused of driving drunk with Schaumburg teens in truck bed

A Chicago man was charged with aggravated DUI after authorities say he drove recklessly and ran into a garage while two Schaumburg teens sat in the bed of his pickup truck.

Cook County prosecutors said both boys, ages 14 and 15, were injured.

James Kalinsky, 51, a former neighbor of the teens, encountered them in their apartment complex Sunday evening and offered them a ride, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Walsh said.

Authorities said Kalinsky swerved from side to side and made sudden stops while the boys sat in the bed of his pickup truck.

Kalinsky eventually crashed the car into a brick garage on the 1100 block of E. Algonquin Road, Schaumburg, causing bricks to tumble onto the head and body of one teen, who suffered cuts and bruises, Walsh said. The impact threw the other teen against a toolbox located in the bed of the truck, Walsh said.

Kalinsky failed field sobriety tests and registered a .14 blood alcohol content, Walsh said.

A Cook County judge set bail at $35,000 for Kalinsky, who prosecutors say received supervision for a 1991 DUI conviction and probation for a 1981 cannabis possession.

One of the teens suffered a rib fracture and the other suffered contusions. Authorities say both have been released from the hospital.

Kalinsky next appears in court on Sept. 30.
