St. Charles standoff involving gun ends safely

A standoff between St. Charles Police and a suicidal woman with a shotgun ended safely over the weekend after police fired pepper balls into the room.Police arriving at the apartment on the 1700 block of Cumberland Green Drive found the woman#146;s husband outside and learned that his suicidal wife locked herself in a bedroom, which contained a shotgun.

Officers were unable to talk with the woman. While they were preparing to deploy a #147;pepper agent#148; into the room, the 49-year-old woman pointed a shotgun in the direction of the officers outside a window, according to police.

The woman#146;s husband previously told police the gun was #147;inoperable#148; and no shots were fired.

Officers then shot pepper spray into the room while ordering the woman to drop the weapon, but she left the room soon after with the gun in hand and was Tasered, according to police.

Police found the gun was unloaded and had a trigger lock.

The woman was taken to Delnor Hospital and was later taken to a second hospital for further treatment, according to police.

Charges are pending her release from the hospital.
