Apolo Ohno to join Chicago Half Marathon runners

World champion short-track speed-skater Apolo Ohno will participate in the Chicago Half Marathon and Karhu 5K on Sept. 11 as part of his training for the 2011 ING New York City Marathon next fall.

Ohno’s appearance is also sponsored by SUBWAY restaurants as part of an ongoing effort to promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

As the most decorated American winter athlete of all time, Ohno is best known for record-breaking achievements as a world-class short-track speed skater. Over his storied career, Ohno has captured more than 30 international medals and is a 12-time U.S. National Champion.

Ohno’s national appeal took another step in 2007 after he became the winner of the fourth season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” television show.

“Running the Chicago Half Marathon is the perfect preparation before I tackle my first full marathon in New York City in November,” said Ohno. “I hope my journey can serve as an inspiration for others to meet their health goals and ultimately make smarter nutrition and lifestyle choices.”

“The Chicago Half Marathon will be a great step in his training program and we are honored to have him as a participant,” said Greg Laird, founder and CEO of US Road Sports and Entertainment, the organization behind the Sept. 11 event, which will feature 20,000 runners in the Chicago Half Marathon and Karhu 5K.

The course takes the runners along Lake Shore Drive for 13.1 miles. Registration for the race is still open at www.ChicagoHalfMarathon.com .
