Burmese tutoring program running low on funding

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A northeastern Indiana nonprofit group that has helped Burmese students with reading and homework help says it needs financial help to continue the work when federal stimulus money dries up in December.

The Neighborhood Action Center in Fort Wayne runs a tutoring center that has helped about 140 students in East Allen County Schools. Center volunteers also provide language help to preschool-age Burmese children.

The Journal Gazette reports the center was originally funded through a donation from Fellowship Missionary Church. It has relied on about $100,000 in stimulus funds and other donations more recently, but the stimulus money will run out at year’s end.

Board President Jeanne Zehr says the need for tutoring is great.
