Pa. police seek soldier in 4 deaths; officers hurt

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — Authorities in suburban Philadelphia say a soldier sought in four slayings in two states fired at officers during a pursuit and remains at large.

Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler said Sunday that 37-year-old Leonard John Egland of Fort Lee, Va., is being sought in the Virginia deaths of his ex-wife, her boyfriend and her boyfriend’s young son. Heckler didn’t know when they were killed. Pennsylvania authorities are seeking him in the death of his former mother-in-law, 66-year-old Barbara Ruehl of Buckingham.

Heckler says Egland dropped off his young daughter at a hospital Saturday night. Hospital workers called police, who tracked down Egland. He shot at officers who tried to stop him, wounding one. Glass flying from a shattered windshield injured another.

A SWAT team is looking for him in Pennsylvania.
