The 5-foot-5 senior is one of nine seniors on Mendoza’s roster. “The girls have worked very hard in the off-season to quicken our game and give our team a better opportunity to win games,” Mendoza said. “Our team is unified in making this its best season ever.” North, who will play in the middle, was an all-area basketball player last winter. “With returning defensive experience and a quicker, more experienced offense, we look forward to the tough competition of the MSL.” Mendoza added.

Outlook: The Grenadiers finished one game above .500 last fall in Kezios’ first season. That team broke a lot of school records, including most kills in a season (869) and most assists (726). Playing a big part in that was Jessica Condon, who graduated after an all-area season. The Grens recently lost the services of Melanie Jarosz, who was to be a key returning player. “She received an MRI and was told she has two tears in her right (hitting) shoulder,” Kezios said. “We have moved a lot of young players up who will have to quickly adjust to the pace of playing in a varsity match.” The Grens will continue to strive for the top half of the conference. “We hope to do that with the help of our key returnees, who have the experience needed to win at this competitive level,” Kezios said.

Fesl, Pedersen and Haas are three of the top players. Add the athletic Hogen into the mix and the Huskies have an attack that will be tough to stop. #147;With those three, Taylor Schill#146;s stellar defense and Maggie who knows how to win and perform at crunch time, we#146;re pretty solid with some phenomenal talent,#148; said Lill, who has 749 wins in her 27-year career. #147;We just have to fill in a few missing pieces and will need consistency there. The team chemistry is really good. We have a good nucleus back from last year and it should be better.#148;

She also co-founded Eastern Illinois University#146;s club program in 2003, playing a leading role both on and off the court until graduating in 2005. Her first team at Leyden will be young, and a less-experienced team than last season. Four starters graduated from a team that won 19 matches for coach Dave Sebald. Outside hitters Murphy and Zaccariello played a different position last year. #147;These two girls both play club ball and will be counted on to be leaders on and off the court,#148; Sitkowski said. Carrasquillo and Markowski are returning middles. #147;They may not be the tallest middles in our conference,#148; Sitkowski said. #147;But their hard work and dedication to the team will pay off.#148; Other returning players who will see more court time are Simian, Sacksteder and Bielak. Setters Smerz and O#146;Kray are new to the team while Matz and Arreola will play in the back row. #147;We compete against some top teams in our area throughout the season and have teams who excel in our conference,#148; Sitkowksi said. #147;However, I have high expectations.
