Cook County reports man is second West Nile case

A suburban Chicago man in his 20s is the second confirmed human case of West Nile virus in Cook County.

The county’s Department of Public Health says the South Holland man is doing well after getting sick and being hospitalized earlier this month.

Authorities last week announced the county’s first case this year is a man in his 80s from Palatine. A department spokeswoman says he’s still hospitalized, but is recovering.

A southern Illinois man in his 30s who fell ill last month is the only other reported human case in the state.

More than 200 Cook County mosquito pools and seven birds have tested positive. Department chief Stephen Martin says people should know the risk for infection is rising and should take precautions, including wearing repellant.
