Blame the state for U-46 bus woes

I empathize with the U-46 parents over the new bus routes reported in the Daily Herald where students must walk up to 1½ miles to catch a bus. However, it appears to me that U-46 is attempting to make the best of a bad situation.

According to the article, the state of Illinois has not been funding transportation to the district over the past four years, totaling $14 million, or $3.5 million a year. The parents should be taking their concerns to Gov. Quinn as the state is responsible for the district’s shortfall in transportation. The savings on the new routes are estimated at up to $1.25 million. If the state paid even half of their $3.5 million shortfall, it would more than cover the savings of the new routes, and then perhaps the students could resume their former routes.
