Quinn signs bill for school planning transparency

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has signed new legislation aimed at more transparency with how Chicago public schools use their budgets.

The bill requires Chicago Public Schools to create a 10-year plan that charts school repairs and construction investments. The bill comes after some communities protested numerous school closings that were announced with little warning.

The new law requires school officials to inform the public about proposed changes by Dec. 1 each year. They also must provide advance notice of public hearings.

Quinn signed the law Saturday, saying it would improve students’ learning and give communities more input on how school budgets are spent.
