While at East High School, he was active in chorale, jazz choir, orchestra, soccer, tennis, theater, drama club and speech team. He also achieved Eagle Scout rank with the Boy Scouts and received numerous honors: National Honor Society, President’s Award on Volunteerism, St. Charles East Academic Team, ISAC State Scholar, AP Scholar with Honors, Senior Theater Award, International Thespian Society Letter, Kane County Sheriff’s Citizen of the Year Nominee, VFW Eagle Scout of the Year state of Illinois, American Red Cross Home Town Hero and St. Charles Sportsman Club Employee of the Month.

Amatangelo said that “teaching would allow me to share my love of history with others. I also plan to pursue my law degree at the University of Michigan so that I can help those that need professional assistance. No matter what happens in the future, I will be able to practice law or teach, or combine the two together.”
