McHenry historical society offers quilt exhibit, appraisal

Submitted by McHenry County Historical Society

The McHenry County Historical Society Museum will offer an afternoon of quilt appraisals by Crystal Lake quilt appraiser and author Sandy Schweitzer from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the museum, 6422 Main St., Union.

Six privately owned quilts will be examined and discussed by Schweitzer as she provides the audience with information on quilt history and identification clues. Her booklet, “Protecting Your Quilts and More,” is in color and available at the museum for purchase.

The quilt appraisal program is one in a series of special quilting events taking place as part of the three-month Northern Illinois Quilt Fest. As an anchor site for McHenry County events, the historical society is offering a variety of local travel and learning programs through September.

In addition to the Aug. 21 program, the museum features a special quilt show in its air-conditioned facility. One of the rarest quilts in the show is a political one dating to 1840 and promoting presidential candidate William Henry Harrison’s log cabin campaign. Each of the 33 quilts on display is described in a printed quilt show brochure.

To accommodate the interest in the show, the McHenry County Historical Society Museum will be open daily from 1 to 4 p.m., except Mondays. Those coming to Union from the north should note the detour signs for the bridge on North Union Road.

There is a museum admission fee for those who are not members of the historical society. To receive a copy of the other Northern Illinois Quilt Fest activities going on in McHenry County or a map of the area barn quilts and quilt gardens, call the society at (815) 923-2267, email info@mchonline.org or visit www.NorthernIllinoisQuiltFest.com.
