Motorcyclist killed in Elgin hit-and-run crash

Elgin police continue to investigate a hit-and-run crash that killed a 25-year-old Elgin man on a motorcycle Wednesday night.

The 48-year-old driver of a 1999 GMC Suburban that was involved in the crash was taken into custody after police found her inside her home on the 200 block of Channing Street with the vehicle parked outside shortly after the collision, said Elgin police spokeswoman Sue Olafson.

Twenty-five-year-old Francisco Acevedo was pronounced dead at Provena St. Joseph Hospital shortly after the 7 p.m. crash at the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Mosley Street, police said.

Authorities said Acevedo was traveling west on Walnut Avenue on his 2001 Yamaha motorcycle when he struck the side of the GMC Suburban as it was turning left onto Walnut from Mosley Street.

Michele Higareda, who was driving the GMC, fled the scene, police said. She was transported to Sherman Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries after police located her at home a few blocks from the intersection, Olafson said.

Multiple people witnessed the crash and were able to help police locate Higareda's vehicle, Olafson said.

Higareda is being held on unrelated charges on outstanding warrants pending further investigation of the crash.
