New Illinois State Police cadets begin classes

A new class of Illinois State Police cadets will soon begin training.

Illinois State Police director Hiram Grau says the 74 members of Cadet Class 119 will start their 25-week academy program in Springfield on Aug. 21.

State police training academy commander Rebecca Long calls it a physical, emotional and intellectual challenge. Cadets will study subjects like terrorism awareness, domestic violence and juvenile law. They will also undergo firearms training and learn emergency pursuit driving. Cadets have to stay overnight at the academy five days a week.

Cadets will graduate in February 2012. They’ll then become probationary troopers and be assigned to districts statewide.
