Sex offender arrest in Grayslake

A 45-year-old sex offender who recently moved to the Grayslake area faces charges for being present in a school zone, Grayslake authorities said.

Anthony Shiner, 45, formerly of Indiana, was arrested Friday after he was spotted sitting on a bench across the street from 4 Kids Child Care and Learning Center on Center Street, said Grayslake interim Police Chief Matt McCutcheon.

Police received a suspicious person tip about Shiner, and when officers arrived at the day care, they saw him sitting on the bench staring at the school, McCutcheon said.

“We've had some contact with Mr. Shiner a couple times in the last month, and each time, it was because he was loitering in places he wasn't allowed to be at,” he said. “So, it was decided that he had to be arrested.”

Because he is a sex offender, Shiner is prohibited from being within 500 feet of a school, day care center or park, McCutcheon said.

Shiner was also charged for not registering as a sex offender in Grayslake, as required by law.

Shiner remains in Lake County jail on a $25,000 bond, officials said. He must post 10 percent of the bond before being released.

Shiner was found guilty in Hartford City, Ind., for a sex offense with a child, McCutcheon said.

Shiner also did not contact Indiana authorities and tell them he was leaving the state, as required by law, McCutcheon said. Indiana prosecutors are working with Grayslake police regarding any possible charges for that violation.
