Police: Driver was throwing money before fatal crash

Witnesses of a weekend crash on Interstate 88 that killed two people said the driver of a Porsche that pulled a U-turn and headed into oncoming traffic Saturday night was throwing money from a convertible sports car, police said.

The 43-year-old Naperville man who was driving the red 2006 Porsche remains hospitalized in critical condition but is expected to survive the multiple-vehicle crash near Lisle that killed Elmhurst residents Sherali Shalwani, 74, and Farzana Ali, 37, according to police.

“We had an original call that the male was throwing U.S. currency out the window,” said Illinois State Police Sgt. Julio Serrano. “We found one bill out there.

“We are looking into the one bill.”

A 42-year-old Elmhurst man who was driving the 2004 Toyota Corolla with the two passengers remains hospitalized in serious condition, police said.

Authorities have not spoken to the Naperville man but said charges are likely to be filed when he is released from the hospital.

Although toxicology results are pending, investigators do not suspect alcohol played a factor in the crash.

“There was no initial indication of any alcohol or drugs, nothing overtly showing that,” Serrano said.

The Naperville man was driving the convertible Porsche east on I-88 about 6:30 p.m. Saturday when he pulled a U-turn into oncoming traffic and struck the Toyota sedan head-on, police said.

A minivan and station wagon were also damaged in the crash, but no one in either of those vehicles was injured.
