Clarendon Hills man pleads guilty to Naperville burglary

A Clarendon Hills man accused of breaking into six Naperville businesses within a week faces up to seven years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to burglary.

Michael Carvell, 31, pleaded guilty to a March 31 burglary at a Subway restaurant on the 1500 block of Route 59 in Naperville. In exchange, prosecutors dismissed charges involving five other break-ins reported over the last five days of March.

Assistant State’s Attorney Jae Kwon said police arrested Carvell after he was spotted outside a strip mall about 1:15 a.m. April 1. He said police found in Carvell’s pocket a large rock matching the kind of tool used to smash windows in other burglaries.

In the March 31 case, Kwon said, Carvell broke into the Subway on Route 59, then raided the cash register. He said surveillance footage of the burglary showed a suspect matching Carvell, and shoe prints found at the scene matched the shoes Carvell was wearing when he was arrested.

Carvell faces three to seven years in prison when he is sentenced Aug. 31 by DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin. He also is eligible for up to four years of probation, authorities said.

In addition to the March 31 break-in, Carvell had been accused of burglarizing two other Subway restaurants and three nail salons on the 1200 and 1300 blocks of Naper Boulevard and on the 900 block of West 75th Street in Naperville. The rash of overnight burglaries led police to increase patrols in the area.

Carvell, who last lived on the 500 block of Alabama Street, remained in the county jail Monday on $75,000 bail.
