Sentencing delayed for reputed Chicago mobster
There's a delay in the sentencing of an 87-year-old reputed mobster convicted in the bombing of a Chicago-area video poker company.
Sam Volpendesto's attorneys want more time to ensure their jailed client understands he faces a possible sentence of several decades.
A federal judge granted the request Monday just hours before he was scheduled to impose a sentence. The defense says it only needs a week or two delay. The judge didn't immediately set a new date.
The main figure in the recent trial is reputed mob boss Michael "The Large Guy" Sarno. He's supposed to be sentenced next month.
The diminutive, gray-haired Volpendesto was a co-defendant. He gained notoriety for seeming to brag in secret recordings about watching one mobster put a human body through a meat grinder.
