Stability no argument against gay marriage

Larry O’Neill of Palatine supports a ban on gay marriage and civil unions (Fence Post, June 18) because he has “carefully thought through the implications for our country and culture” and “marriage is vital to the stability and preservation of our society in which a father and mother raise and nurture children.” According to Larry, “a new Gallup poll shows that the best data available put the prevalence of homosexuality at 1 percent to 4 percent of the U.S. population.”

Unfortunately, it seems Larry has missed the larger issue, namely that 40 percent to 50 percent of marriages in the U.S. end in divorce. Question for Larry: If your primary concern is that “marriage is vital to the stability and preservation of our society,” why are you not proposing a ban on heterosexual divorce?
