Navistar closing Ind. plant, shifts work in state

DuPage County based- avistar International plans to shift production work from an eastern Indiana factory it is closing to other plants in the state.

The company intends to shut down the Workhorse Custom Chassis factory in Union City this fall. The factory in the city along the Indiana-Ohio state line has about 225 workers.

Navistar spokeswoman Karen Denning tells the Palladium-Item of Richmond that the Union City factory's design makes it cost prohibitive.

She says that work will be moved to other Navistar plants in Indiana, but declined to say where. The company also has operations in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis.

Randolph Economic Development Corp. director Kevin Law said says the closing was a surprise but that the county will have a 200,000-square-foot building available to market.
