Arlington Heights investigating reported road rage rollover

A 16-year-old driver who told Arlington Heights police he was fleeing a road rage incident escaped serious injury Tuesday when he was ejected from his car after it crashed into a tree and rolled all the way over, landing upright on its wheels.

The crash occurred about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday on the 300 block of South Windsor Drive, a divided street with a boulevard, as the teen said he was trying to escape another driver wielding a baseball bat.

The boy was transported after the crash to Northwest Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.

According to what the young man told police “something might have happened in traffic to precipitate” the other driver’s anger, Sgt. Mike Hernandez said. But the 16-year-old told police he did not know what that was.

The other driver was behind the wheel of a newer blue Pontiac SUV, according to reports. He was estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old with black hair and a black goatee.

The altercation began at Prindle Avenue and Grove Street, according to police. From there, the 16-year-old sped west on Grove, and when he came to the T-intersection with Windsor tried to make a right hand turn. A witness reported the vehicle went onto the boulevard, hit a curb and a tree and then rolled over completely.

Hernandez said the matter remains under investigation, and police would like to get the whole story before considering charges.
