Put down your cell; watch for workers

Welcome to the construction season in a town near you.

During the summer months bridges and roads are being repaired or replaced, the parkway grass and trees are getting trimmed, utilities are being installed or improved.

Skilled crews perform this hard and dangerous work in the sweltering heat or pouring rain without very much protection. Remember the work these dedicated employees are performing is not meant to annoy you, so please be patient.

The men and women doing these necessary jobs have someone waiting for them to arrive home after work.

Please practice some simple safety rules as you sit comfortably in your air-conditioned and dry vehicle. Turn on your headlights and flashers. Stop talking on the cellphone and don’t text. Follow the signs but don’t follow other vehicles too closely. Slow down, pay close attention, and give the workers a wide berth as you carefully drive by.

Thanks to all municipal workers, utility employees and private contractors for a great job in keeping our roads in good condition and a special thanks to the police for keeping them safe.
