Prospect students help build home in Wisconsin

Nine students and staff members from Prospect High School in Mount Prospect, took a break from their usual summer activities and traveled to Washington County, Wis., to help Habitat for Humanity with construction of a new duplex for two needy families and its new Re-Store in West Bend. The students are members of the school#146;s Service Club, which is a group that participates in volunteer service projects in its community. This was the 14th summer trip for the club, which had previously assisted Habitat affiliates in other Wisconsin locations including Two Rivers, Milwaukee, Oshkosh and Stevens Point, among others. The group stayed at Holy Angels Church, thanks to the hospitality of Deacon Mark Jansen. Washington County Habitat for Humanity volunteer coordinator Cindy Helt facilitated the trip for the group, as she set up the work schedule, organized lunches and dinners and provided the group with some historical perspective on Habitat for Humanity. The group spent three days working on the two houses under construction and at the soon-to-be-opened Habitat Re-Store. Under the direction of project supervisor Tony Cable, the group installed blue foam insulation around the duplex, and helped out at the Re-Store by sanding floors; priming and painting several walls and rooms; and installing, mudding and taping drywall. The group also found time to have some fun. Tuesday night they attended the Washington County Fair, where they rode many of the rides and watched the fireworks show. Wednesday night they went go-karting at Stocky#146;s and finished the evening with frozen custard at Toucan#146;s. Thursday the group visited the summer home of Habitat Executive Director Russ Wanta where they rode wave runners in Lake Michigan and ate a fine Mexican-style dinner. The students in the group included seniors Rachel Foster, Kristen Klippert, Megan McCoy, Natalie Pacini, Ashley Sargus and Urszula Tyl, and junior John Sullivan. The two staff members on the trip were Service Learning coordinator Dave Jacobson and counselor Rachel Brill.Ÿ Send Your news to nbrcalendar@dailyherald.com.
