Fur makes fashion comeback

After several seasons in deep hibernation, fur heated up the fall runways. Designers from Alber Elbaz to Zac Posen chose fox, lamb, ostrich and dyed maribou to add texture and drama to their collections. Inspired by the theme, retailers are offering both affordable and politically uncontroversial faux interpretations — scarves, hats, vests, boots, gloves, even full-length coats — perfect for dashing through the snow.

Ÿ Pop the portrait collar and face the elements protected by Weatherproof’s chic cheetah print faux fur coat. The plush, velvety fleece accented with faux horn buttons ensures you’ll be ready for the wild. For a slimmer silhouette, cinch the waist with a skinny belt. $180 at www.garnethill.com.

Ÿ Nothing would be finer (or cozier) than to snuggle up by the hearth on a chilly winter weekend wrapped up in one of West Elm’s faux fur throws. The generous size (50 by 60 inches) means you can invite a friend to share the warmth. $119 at West Elm stores and www.westelm.com.

Ÿ A fluff of faux fur at the wrist elevates Ann Taylor Loft’s wool gloves from plain Jane to flirty and feminine. If you dare (and know a good dry cleaner), wear them with a winter-white jacket or a coat with three-quarter-length sleeves. $29.50 at Ann Taylor Loft stores.

Ÿ The synthetic shearling trim on Fahrenheit’s Elysee ankle boot will keep tootsies toasty, while the buckle detail and angled heel ante up the allure of this reasonably priced addition to your boot wardrobe. $40 at www.endless.com.

Ÿ Proper Topper’s trooper hat says retro with its lumberjack plaid reminiscent of the ‘70s. A fill-up of faux fur trimming offers a dash of modern, and the practical wool lining will keep your head warm. $40 at Proper Topper in Washington.
