Rally planned to protest firing of Sugar Grove library director

A rally protesting the firing of the Sugar Grove Library Director Beverly Holmes Hughes is planned for 6 p.m. today, just before a library board meeting.

A group called Citizens for a Better Sugar Grove is organizing the event. The notice was signed by Pat Graceffa and Ken Wiesner. Graceffa is a member of the Friends of the Sugar Grove Library and publishes an email community newsletter, and Wiesner once sought election to the library board.

The rally will be in front of the library, 125 S. Municipal Drive, Sugar Grove.

“As many of you know, Beverly's imprint on our community reaches far beyond her 20 years of leading our library. If you've been in our new lovely Library building, you see Beverly's hard work. If you've been to the Corn Boil, you've seen Beverly's sweat equity and organizational talent. If you've shopped the Farmer's Market, you've benefited from Beverly's efforts. If you've been involved with the Chamber of Commerce, the League of Women Voters, the Senior Center ... you get the idea. The board of trustees has betrayed our trust — and we deserve to know why,” the two wrote in an email about the rally.

The group has started a Facebook page about the matter called “We Support Beverly.”

Library board President Joan Roth and Trustee Julie Wilson have not returned emails or phone calls seeking comment about the firing. Two other trustees declined to comment at all, one declined to cite a specific reason and one said he didn't think she deserved to be fired.

The board meets at 7 p.m.
