Palatine's Anthem Grill closes after 2-year run on Euclid Avenue

The Anthem Grill in Palatine has closed its doors a little more than two years after it opened, making it the latest in a long line of restaurants unable to thrive in an again vacant Euclid Avenue building.

“It's really just the economy,” co-owner Chris Tsolinas said. “Business started off OK, but people just aren't going out to eat as much.”

The sports bar and grill closed after its Sunday night service. Assistant Village Manager Sam Trakas said the establishment's liquor license was turned in on Tuesday.

The building at 704 W. Euclid Ave., in the Regency Shopping Center, had been separated into two spaces since its construction in the mid-1990s.

Marlowe's had a long run on the western side, while the other side was a revolving door of restaurants that included Tamale Wally's, Toscana and Marlowe's banquet services. Anthem Grill took over the entire space in 2009.

“The restaurant business on its own is tricky, and while from a customer's standpoint it was neat to have two different feels on each side, it was a large space,” Deputy Village Manager Mike Jacobs said. “It seems as though restaurants are trending to smaller spaces due to less overhead and seasonal fluctuations in business.”

Tsolinas agreed the size of the building was a problem, and also pointed to a lack of foot traffic on Euclid compared to other main corridors in Palatine.

“The other thing that hurt us is not being along the train tracks where we can get a younger crowd who can easily hop from Arlington Heights or Barrington,” Tsolinas said.

Jacobs said that he's already contacted the property management company, Mid-America, to discuss plans for potential new tenants.
