Examples of increased fees
States and cities across the nation are raising fees to bring in new money for governments reeling from cuts and revenue shortfalls. Some examples:
California: Increased vehicle registration fees.
Connecticut: New sales taxes on yoga classes, pet grooming, manicures and many other services.
Georgia: New fees on day care licenses, fireworks permits, traveling circuses and many more items.
Greensboro, N.C.: Doubled fines for parking in fire lanes.
Louisiana: Higher state park fees.
Maryland: Higher fees for birth certificates, new vehicle titles, vanity plates and the filing of land records.
Oregon: Higher fees for medical marijuana.
Philadelphia: Higher parking meter fees.
Providence, R.I.: New fee for mattress disposal.
Rhode Island: Most beach fees nearly doubled. New sales taxes on over-the-counter drugs, smartphone applications and sightseeing tours.
South Dakota: Higher state park fees.
Tennessee: Higher traffic fines.
Tybee Island, Ga.: Higher parking fees and fines.
Wisconsin: Imposed new fee to retake state driving exam.
Wyoming: Higher fees for trucks exceeding weight limits.
