Downed tree closes Route 31 in Batavia

A tree in the 200 block of North Batavia Avenue, between McKee and Illinois streets, fell onto Batavia Avenue during Friday’s midmorning storm, taking electrical wires with it. No one was injured.

City of Batavia electrical workers cleared the live wires, then street department workers removed the tree from the street, according to Steve Lusted, Batavia electrical operations manager.

The break knocked out power to several homes on Batavia Avenue (Route 31), which was closed in both directions while the work was going on. Power was later restored and the road reopened in both directions.

There were no power outages reported in Geneva. The city of St. Charles said the midmorning storm didn’t cause any outages, but the storm at 1 a.m. did. It knocked out power to about 30 houses, but power was restored within an hour, according to a city spokesman.

According to officials at the Kane County Fair in St. Charles, the storm did not cause any cancellations Friday.
