Mom of teen in videotaped beating death speaks out

CHICAGO (AP) — The mother of a Chicago teen whose 2009 beating death was captured on videotape and circulated worldwide says her son should be remembered for more than what’s seen on the tape.

Five defendants were convicted in the murder of high school honor student Derrion Albert. In the cellphone camera video, Albert is seen being punched, slammed over his head with large boards, kicked and finally stomped on his head just blocks from his Chicago high school. The fourth defendant, 20-year-old Eugene Riley, was sentenced to 32 years Tuesday. A fifth person will be sentenced next month.

Albert’s mom, Anjanette Albert, says her son would have graduated and earned scholarships.

She says she’s glad that schools have beefed up security but that it shouldn’t have taken her son’s death.
