Literacy Connection recognizes volunteers, learners

Submitted by Literacy Connection

The Literacy Connection awarded learners and volunteers for their accomplishments at its annual recognition dinner and program on June 6 at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin.

The event’s theme was “Celebrating the Chapters of Our Lives,” representing a celebration of the many accomplishments that the learners, tutors and volunteers have achieved throughout the years. The Literacy Connection currently has more than 200 tutors and other volunteers who help over 300 students each year reach their literacy goals.

Seventy-one tutors, students and administrative volunteers who had devoted 50 hours or more to Literacy Connection programs during the 2010-11 year received certificates. In addition, six tutors and 12 learners received special certificates commemorating 5 or 10 years of participation in The Literacy Connection’s programs. Over 30 individuals also were recognized by way of written nominations submitted by their own students or tutors; the nominations were displayed during the recognition event.

The event also included the election of officers and directors for fiscal year 2011-12. Officers include: Dr. Mi Hu, president; Howard Russo, vice president; Trudy Zaja, treasurer; Carlos Trujillo, secretary; and board directors Chris Awe, Denise Bowman, Terry Foster, Deborah Giardina, Lon Meltesen and Carlos Trujillo.
