Art at the Shops festival returns to Yorktown Center

For the second year in a row, the Yorktown Shopping Center in Lombard will be hosting Art at the Shops, a fine art and craft festival.

The festival will feature approximately 50 artists from across the country displaying their works among the outdoor gardens at The Shops on Butterfield from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 16, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 17.

A variety of juried art, including paintings, jewelry, ceramics, sculptures and photography, will be presented throughout the weekend.

“The quality of these artists’ work is extremely high,” said Debbie Netter, organizer from D&W Events, which is running the show.

In addition to seeing professional art, children can make their own masterpieces in a hands-on activities area.

An opening gala runs 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday with live music by the band Out of Control, as well as a Taste of Yorktown Center with food and beverage samplings from some of the restaurants in the mall.

Those who donate art supplies to the People’s Resource Center during the gala will be entered in a drawing for prizes such as a $200 Yorktown gift card, a one-night stay for two at the Westin Lombard or a Universal Bluetooth in-car speakerphone from Best Buy Mobile.

The People’s Resource Center, based in Wheaton, offers an arts studio, as well as food, clothing and emergency assistance to families in need.

The management of the Yorktown Center created Art at the Shops last year to bring some fine artists to the area and also increase traffic to the mall, Netter said.

Netter said the outdoor gardens are a great place for the art festival because they are scenic and offer visitors plenty of shade.

Organizers hope to make Art at the Shops an annual tradition in Lombard.
