Bowman optimistic he can sign Frolik, Campoli

General manager Stan Bowman remains hopeful he can get restricted free agents Michael Frolik and Chris Campoli signed before too much longer.

“We’re still negotiating,” the Blackhawks general manager said Monday. “It’s an ongoing thing back and forth with the agents and myself. We’re not there yet, but we’re still talking, which is a good sign. We’re tying to look at different options in terms of term and dollar amount. It’s hard to handicap at this point, but we’re hopeful we’ll get it done.”

Campoli has filed for salary arbitration while Frolik is not eligible to go that route.

Bowman thinks it’s still too early to get concerned over Frolik being unsigned.

“It’s July 11,” he said. “It’s only been 11 days since his contract was over. He’s a guy we definitely want to sign.”

Bowman avoided going to arbitration with Viktor Stalberg on Sunday when the Hawks announced a new two-year deal for the 25-year-old winger with a cap hit of $875,000.

“He’s an intriguing mixture of size and skating,” Bowman said. “He had 12 goals last year and didn’t play a big role offensively and still was able to produce. He was a player we wanted to bring back.

“It gives him a chance to grow his game over the next two years. I think there’s more to his game.”

Olesz in the mix:

Stan Bowman dismissed persistent reports the Hawks were looking to buy out the contract of Rostislav Olesz, who they acquired from Florida for Brian Campbell.

Olesz has three years left on his contract with a cap hit of $3.1 million.

“The buyout period has passed,” Bowman said. “He’s a player that needs a fresh start.

“Our coaches haven’t had the chance to be on the ice with him and see where he fits. He has some versatility to his game and he’s still a young player with a lot of ability. It’s just trying to figure out where he fits in best with us and the only way to determine that is to see him on the ice.”

Prospects camp ends:

The five-day prospects camp ended Monday with the second scrimmage.

Stan Bowman didn’t want to name those players who impressed him because there were only two scrimmages this year.

“This was less an evaluation camp and more a development camp,” Bowman said. “We wanted to spend time on ice with coaches and a lot of directed learning, hands-on type work, and that was the focus of the camp. It wasn’t so much trying to uncover the next Blackhawk.”
