Man charged after Round Lake Beach standoff

A 19-year-old man has been charged after a Monday morning standoff at his Round Lake Beach home, during which he fired a stolen handgun forcing authorities to place a high school on lockdown and evacuate nearby residences.

The standoff, which took place about 6 a.m., was on the 900 block of Cedar Lake Road near Woodland Drive. Police said at least one shot was fired. It’s unclear if it was a hostage situation.

Javier Tellez was arrested at 8:30 a.m., roughly three hours after police were called to the home for a report of an extremely distraught person, said Round Lake Beach Deputy Chief Rich Chiarello.

He was charged with possession of a stolen gun, reckless discharge of a firearm, no FOID card for a weapon and no FOID card for ammo, according to police.

Officers arrived at the home at about 5:30 a.m. and heard a single gunshot, according to police.

They surrounded the home, called the Northern Illinois Police Action System and tried to establish contact with the person inside, according to police.

Surrounding homes were evacuated and Round Lake Area High School was placed on lock down during the standoff.

At 8:30 a.m. Tellez exited the back door and was placed in custody, police said.

A search of the residence revealed one handgun, according to police.

No injuries were reported.

A second person was being questioned regarding their role in the standoff.

“The responding agencies did a great job this morning,” Chiarello said. “It was an excellent effort to get everyone together in such a quick time.”

Tellez is due in court Tuesday morning.
