Mo. man drowns in southern Ill.'s Rend Lake

INA, Ill. — Authorities in southern Illinois say a 62-year-old man was the second person in 10 days to drown in Rend Lake's Sandusky Beach area.

Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler says Terrell Abernathy of the St. Louis suburb of Maplewood, Mo., drowned Saturday while swimming with family members.

Leffler says Abernathy called out for help while swimming back to shore. One of his daughters tried to help but had to abandon the rescue after being pulled underwater.

Abernathy disappeared below the water's surface and was found 10 minutes later. He died on arrival at a hospital.

A 19-year-old man drowned near the same spot on June 29. Rend Lake's beaches aren't monitored by lifeguards.

Abernathy's funeral arrangements are pending.
