Currently a Marine recruiter in San Diego, Marrufo was deployed to Iraq for six months in 2007. In addition to many certificates of appreciation, she has received the Combat Action Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.

Marrufo will receive a care package filled with letters from Round Lake Area Unit District 116 students, a personalized "Hanging with the Heroes" T-shirt, chocolate and other sweets.

Hometown Hero project chair Sherry Ridge said Marrufo is a big fan of Orlando's Pizza in Round Lake Beach.

"We'd love to send her a pizza from Orlando's, but not sure how we could do that," Ridge said.

Round Lake Area Exchange Club members will present a July Hometown Hero plaque to Marrufo's family at a meeting July 13. The get-together will be at Panera Bread in Round Lake Beach at 7:30 a.m.

Any and all military personnel serving overseas or in the United States from any of the Round Lake area communities -- Hainesville, Fox Lake or Ingleside -- qualify for the Hometown Hero program.
