Mundelein students win art awards

Submitted by Ron Girard

Two Mundelein High School student artists have been named “Best of the Best” by the Great Frame Up. The awards were announced at a ceremony held at the Thompson Center in Chicago.

Twenty-five high schools were represented in the show where each high school began with 25 student works. Those were then narrowed down to the winning five pieces from the following categories: painting, drawing, graphic communications, photography and three-dimensional. With those five pieces from each school, a total of 125 pieces were on display from the 25 high schools. Awards and scholarships were given to only 15 students’ works, two of which were MHS students.

Stephanie Derks took third place in the Drawing category and received art supplies and a summer scholarship from the American Art Academy. Melanie Leikam was awarded first place in the Painting category and received scholarship money from Mesirow Financial.
