Rolling Meadows woman dies in I-90 crash

A Rolling Meadows woman died early Monday after the minivan she was riding in was rear-ended on I-90 in Des Plaines, authorities said.

Ana Aguilar-Lopez, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene. Seven other people were transported with non-life threatening injuries to area hospitals after the crash took place just before 1 a.m. on I-90 west by the Devon Toll Plaza, said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Legrand. Legrand declined to share his first name.

A Pontiac minivan driven by a woman in her 40s rear-ended a Ford minivan in which Aguilar-Lopez was riding. Aguilar-Lopez was in the back seat and was ejected from the vehicle, he said.

The Ford minivan carrying the victim was, in turn, pushed into a Ford Explorer in front of it, Legrand said.

Legrand said two of the vehicles were stopped on the roadway at the time of the crash, but he did not know why. There were a total of 14 people in the three vehicles involved in the crash, he said.

“I'm not sure how many people were in each car, because it was utter chaos. There were so many ambulances, and family members on the scene,” he said.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing, Legrand said. Drugs and alcohol are not considered a factor at this point, he added.

Legrand didn't know if the victim was wearing a seat belt.

Emergency crews from several municipalities including Des Plaines, Schiller Park, Park Ridge and Chicago responded to the scene.
