Place a bid, help your neighbors

Family Service, a provider of vital behavioral health care services for hundreds of McHenry County individuals and families, is hosting a unique fundraiser to benefit the many programs it supports.

The first Family Service Virtual Auction is going on now at familyservice.myevent.com. Supporters can bid on such one-of-a-kind prizes as a gourmet dinner for six people prepared by a world-class chef, a limited edition football autographed by the 2010 NFC Champion Chicago Bears or a private winery tour.

On display: The winning entries in the annual McHenry County Department of Health community billboard design contest are now on display at gas stations, drive-ins and restrooms. A design depicting the damaging effects of second hand smoke titled #8220;Smoking in your car is hazardous to your family and friends,#8221; by McHenry County College student Jim Anderson, was chosen as one of the winners. Other winners include seniors Megan Teresi of Woodstock High School and Nate Prosser of Johnsburg High School.The contest sought to highlight local artists while also educating the community on the health effects of smoking. Open to all teens, the contest drew entries in three categories #8212; tobacco prevention, secondhand smoke and quit smoking.A panel of judges including teens from local anti-tobacco groups, staff from the McHenry County Department of Health and members of the McHenry County Tobacco Free Coalition, chose winning designs based on peer appeal, originality and design. The contest was made possible by funds received from the Illinois Department of Health.Huntley theater: Members of Huntley High School's Summer Theater Camp will present #8220;Sleeping Beauty and the Z's,#8221; a twist on a much-loved fairy tale. The performances are slated for 7 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday July 15, and 3 p.m. Saturday July 16, at the Huntley High School Performing Arts Center.Tickets are $5 and are available by calling (847) 659-6535 or at the door starting one hour before each performance.
