Vernon Hills Home Depot robbed overnight

Vernon Hills Police are searching for two men who attempted to rob a Home Depot store in Vernon Hills overnight.

Police received several 9-1-1 calls at 1:41 a.m. Tuesday from Home Depot employees who stated two armed, masked men entered the store in the 400 block of Milwaukee Avenue in an apparent robbery attempt, Officer Sharon Joseph said.

Joseph said the two employees were overnight stockers, and were able to flee the store and contact police when the armed robbers entered.

It is unclear the types of weapons the robbers displayed or how they entered the facility, Joseph said.

Police officials said they believe the robbers escaped empty-handed.

No injuries were reported.

Officers from Vernon Hills and neighboring towns, along with officers from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System arrived at a shopping center near the Home Depot and searched for the robbers.

Using K-9 units, Joseph said, police officers went on a store-to-store search in the shopping complex. The other stores in the complex were cleared about 9 a.m.

Officers are still investigating the break-in. Police officers have interviewed the witnesses and the information gathered is under review, Joseph said.

A person who said she was the manager of the Vernon Hills Home Depot could not comment on the record about the situation, except to say the store reopened before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
