Geneva school budget proposal on display

Geneva Unit District 304 proposes to spend 3 percent less on operating expenses in its next fiscal year, but 10 percent more paying down debt.

The school board placed the tentative budget on public display Monday night. A public hearing on the budget will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at the former Coultrap Elementary School, 1113 Peyton St.

To read a copy of the budget, stop by district headquarters at 227 N. Fourth St. between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 and 11 a.m. Friday.

PowerPoint slides from presentations made in May and April are available on the district’s website, geneva304.org, under “finances.”

The budget expects $90.18 million in income and $85.75 million in expenses. About 83 percent of the proposed spending goes for operations, including the education, operations and maintenance and transportation funds.

The budget is for the fiscal year that begins July 1. State law doesn’t require school budgets to be adopted, however, until Sept. 30. The Geneva board had intended to adopt the budget in July, but constituents felt the process was rushed.
