Ridge Family Center for Learning was selected as one of 10 schools in the entire Chicago area to attend the "Best of the Midwest Fuel Up to Play (FUTP) 60 Kids Blitz." Ridge was selected based on the school's performance with FUTP 60. Students had the opportunity to see where the Chicago Bears practice, interact with other FUTP 60 schools and showcase Ridge activities.
Ridge students were also recognized for their FUTP 60 accomplishments. This year, students helped to develop a number of new healthy eating and physical activity initiatives. These include: lunchtime "score cards" on which students track their meals and compare them to My Pyramid recommendations; the Ridge Food Network, a live, student-led broadcast of healthy snack recipes and how-to; a live, all-school morning Jump Start aerobic session; lunch recess fitness opportunities, and an expanded after school Fit Club.
Ridge kicked off the program with a FUTP 60 Family Fitness Night. Families participated in sessions that included yoga, aerobics/kickboxing, fitness bands and stability balls, and line dancing. Families also had the opportunity to learn how to make simple recipe substitutions to create healthier meals.
Many of the new activities were made possible through the FUTP 60 grant that was awarded to Ridge this year. The nearly $2,400 grant helped fund new fitness equipment, nutrition education materials and games, and physical activity program expansion.
