Schaumburg celebrates Leave No Child Inside Month

The Schaumburg Park District has planned a number of events in June to help local kids celebrate the spirit of Leave No Child Inside Month.

Leave No Child Inside is a Chicago Wilderness Consortium effort to reconnect kids with nature.

In Schaumburg, outdoor camps for children ages 5 to 15 will focus on nature and farm-related themes to fit various interests and stimulate children’s appreciation for the outdoors. The camps will take place at the park district’s Spring Valley Nature Center and Heritage Farm, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road.

In “Peonies Aplenty,” both adults and children can learn the history of the Redeker peony farm. The free event takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at the Merkle Cabin.

Camping is the focus of June family programming at Spring Valley. Families can gather around the fire and listen to stories, sing songs and toast marshmallows at “Campfire at the Cabin” from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 10.

And new campers will have the opportunity to learn how to select a campsite, build a fire, pack the right gear, plan meals and other basic camping skills at the “Family Camping Workshop” Saturday, June 11. Both programs cost $12 for park district residents and $18 for nonresidents.

The special family programming rate includes four participants. Additional guests can pay on the day of the program.

Participants will explore the Gray Farm Conservation Area from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, and learn what lives in that tucked-away, neighborhood nature area. There is no charge for this program.

The Chicago Astronomical Society will set their telescopes for a peek at the night skies from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, June 25, in the free program, “Heaven’s Watch: Stars of Scorpius.”

Children ages 7 to 9 will discover which birds call Spring Valley home and meet new feathered friends during “Fantastic Flyers” from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 26. The cost is $6.30 for residents and $9.45 for nonresidents.

The new program “Summer Colors” will focus on colors found in nature. Children ages 5 to 7 will have the opportunity to brighten their palettes from 11 a.m. to noon June 26. The cost is $4.20 for residents and $6.30 for nonresidents.
