Westmont man charged with killing his father

A 32-year-old Westmont man was charged with one count of first-degree murder Sunday in connection with the stabbing death of his father.

DuPage County authorities said that William V. Clifford, 32, of the 800 block of North Pasquinelli Drive, Westmont, fatally stabbed his 63-year-old father, also named William Clifford, after an altercation between the two of them at the younger Clifford's residence.

Police arrived at the residence, which is in the Homestead Studio Suites hotel complex, shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday. The officers were responding to a call about a fight in progress and a possible stabbing.

Investigators found the elder Clifford lying in a third floor hallway, bleeding from multiple stab wounds in his upper body, authorities said.

The victim was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was later pronounced dead. In a news release, the DuPage County state's attorney's office reported that William V. Clifford tried to flee the scene but was immediately apprehended by Westmont police officers.

Clifford is scheduled to appear in bond court on Monday morning. He faces a minimum sentence of 20 to 60 years in prison if convicted.
