Motorcyclist killed near St. Charles

A 57-year-old man was killed in unincorporated St. Charles Sunday afternoon after his motorcycle crashed into a car that was stopped in traffic because it was waiting to make a left turn, authorities said Monday.

David Barker, of Stonecrop Court, St. Charles, died after his 1996 Buell motorcycle struck the rear of a 2006 Chevy Cobalt, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Department.

Barker struck the Cobalt at about 1:30 p.m. while it was stopped in the northbound lanes of Route 25 waiting to turn left onto May Lane, authorities said.

“We don’t know why he didn’t stop,” said Lt. Patrick Gengler, sheriff’s department spokesman. “That’s the only real question we have right now.”

Gengler said authorities don’t believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash and no citations were expected.

The crash threw Barker, who was wearing a helmet, from the motorcycle. He was the bike’s only occupant.

Gengler said witnesses did not report any erratic driving — such as speeding or passing in the other lane — by Barker before the crash.

The Cobalt driver, a 61-year-old St. Charles man, was not injured in the crash.

The Kane County coroner’s office does not plan to perform an autopsy, a representative of that office said.
