Police looking for suspects in Zion home invasion

Zion Police are searching for up to five people who reportedly invaded an apartment, tied up five residents, then beat one of them with a baseball bat.

Police Chief Wayne Brooks said police responded to a call in the 2800 block of Gailee Drive at 11:29 a.m. Wednesday for a reported home invasion.

Brooks said multiple victims — including women and children of unknown ages — were found bound inside the residence. One of the adult male victims had been beaten with a baseball bat.

After tying up everyone in the apartment, the offenders ransacked the residence looking for money for about 25 minutes, he said.

During this time, the victim of the bat attack found an opportunity to escape and jumped head first through a second-story glass window. He screamed for help after landing on the ground, causing the offenders to flee, Brooks said.

The injured victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries suffered during the beating and from jumping through the window, Brooks said. No one else was injured.

Officers were told five male offenders were involved in the home invasion, he said. All were dressed in dark clothing and wearing masks, and armed with handguns. They fled by vehicle in an unknown direction.

Brooks said Wednesday’s home invasion appears to be isolated and the offenders targeted only this apartment.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Zion Police Department’s Criminal Investigative Division at (847) 746-4110 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at (847) 662-2222.
