Wheeling man charged with DUI

A 30-year-old Wheeling man who police say drove a car that struck a parked vehicle admitted to officers that he had taken a combination of prescription drugs, heroin and alcohol before the accident, authorities said.

The crash occurred at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on the 1600 block of North Patton in Arlington Heights.

A Cook County judge set bail at $30,000 Thursday for Garrett Brunson, of the 700 block of Coventry Street. He is charged with aggravated DUI, a class 4 felony punishable by up to one to three years in prison.

Police responding to a report of an accident encountered Brunson, who they said had bloodshot, glassy eyes; slurred speech and was unable to perform field sobriety tests, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Bill Cotter said.

Brunson told officers he had taken Vicodin, Xanax, heroin and had about four beers before getting into the car, Cotter said.

Brunson's background includes a 2007 conviction for misdemeanor DUI and a 2004 supervision for driving on a suspended license, Cotter said.

He next appears in court on June 8.
