Man indicted in series of Naperville burglaries

A Clarendon Hills man suspected of burglarizing six Naperville businesses over five consecutive days has been indicted by a grand jury, prosecutors said Friday. Michael Carvell, 30, of the 500 block of Alabama Street, is accused of breaking into three nail salons and three Subway restaurants during the last five days of March. The jury indicted him Thursday on six counts of burglary and two counts of theft over $500.

Naperville police arrested Carvell about 1:15 a.m. April 1 while probing a rash of burglaries at businesses along 75th Street and North Route 59. Police said he was holding a large rock when they took him into custody near a business on the 1500 block of West Ogden Avenue.

According to court records, Carvell is accused of burglarizing Subway restaurants on the 1500 block of North Route 59, the 1300 block of Naper Boulevard, and the 900 block of West 75th Street. He also is charged with breaking into Bella Nails on the 1200 block of Naper Boulevard, NP Nails on the 1300 block of Naper Boulevard, and Nail Art on the 900 block of West 75h.

The indictment alleges that Carvell stole between $500 and $10,000 in one Subway burglary, and also made off with a television belonging to Nail Art.

Police said the burglaries all occurred overnight or in early morning hours after the businesses’ windows were smashed. The spree prompted increased patrols in the area.

Carvell remained in the DuPage County jail Friday on $75,000. He is due in court May 2 before Judge Daniel Guerin.
